Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta featured in the UK, an 18-year-old representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he repeated the feat. When he returned to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he did it once more. An excellent finish, too. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the brief trip to Loiu and another trip to England, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.
In the three years since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river accompanied by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, being released, a demotion and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of their lives.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the first team but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed in tears in 2020, aged 23, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he scored three times in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, sometimes, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
