European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
