A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs locations throughout Japan and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the company president, a notable figure at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Following the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," adding, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This new acquisition tops his previous record purchases:
Despite once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record yet again.
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," said one happy customer.
