Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.

Play-Off Decider

That led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To play with him the last two days was really special,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Other Performances

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
